A Criação do Dia

About the João Pessoa Municipal Symphony Orchestra

“A Criação do Dia” (The Creation of the Day) is a classical piece for full orchestra composed by Lalalli Senna for the João Pessoa Municipal Symphony Orchestra (OSMJP), a symphony orchestra located in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. It was first performed at the opening of the 3rd João Pessoa International Classical Music Festival in 2015. The original inspiration for this work is traditional Brazilian regional rhythms, such as baião, an essential element of Paraíba's culture, history, and landscape. Lalalli considers Paraíba a source of composers and artists who have greatly influenced his creations.

The main theme of “A Criação do Dia” portrays the Sun as the protagonist, in its eternal cycle of birth, death, and resurrection. Therefore, it is a cyclical work, beginning and ending with the same musical theme. The Sun is presented through its earthly nature, linked to the natural-telluric elements in the context of the Cerrado, and related to the "rhythms of the earth," represented in quaternary time signatures (the four seasons, the four elements), and also its cosmic/celestial dimension, represented in ternary time signatures. This piece demonstrates an integration of these two numerical representations, 3 and 4, the celestial and the terrestrial, and the life that results from their union. The author dedicates this work to the state of Paraíba, the people of Paraíba, and the OSMJP (Orquestra Sinfônica de João Pessoa). As expected, “A Criação do Dia” was warmly received by the public and has been continuously performed by the João Pessoa Symphony Orchestra, being considered one of the most representative compositions in its repertoire.

"My main objective is to make music an instrument to express the great integration between the sun and the earth, the telluric and celestial aspects united by creation."

The Creation of the Day

The OSMJP emerged from the Chamber Orchestra of the City of João Pessoa, created in 2001. In 2013, it became the Municipal Symphony Orchestra of João Pessoa, being officially presented at the 1st International Classical Music Festival of João Pessoa under the artistic direction and conducting of maestro Laércio Sinhorelli Diniz.
